After Using for a while I wanted to share my thoughts on the BlackBerry 9800 Torch which is launching on AT&T today. RIM outdid itself with this smartphone as it marries the touch-screen and the slide-out keyboard. It's the best of both worlds. It is ideal for Apps like CRM software. What I really like is the combination of the hardware and the BlackBerry OS 60.  It's fast, responsive and intuitive, and the UI draws you in. I also like that it is still very small in size. I have a number of friends who are Verizon users who can't wait for it to become available to them.

CRM Software - The importance of a Smartphone Client

After years - most CRM Software vendors are still not providing an app to download with data stored locally.

The app stores from Apple and BlackBerry have really raised awareness that apps like this exist.

Despite that Siebel CRM Microsoft CRM SugarCRM and other CRM Software companies have not embraced a rich client app.

At this point I don't think it is in question as to if they should provide smartphone CRM clients.  Read more below to find out why I think this is the case.

After a week at the BlackBerry show I think RIM has really done a great job!

They have learned from the likes of Apple and are doing some of the same thinks better.  For example the new RIM App World is an enterprise ready repository of applications.

The BlackBerry storm will be coming very soon to Verizion.  It will be very interesting to see how they handle the touch screen.  We will be working with Mobile Edge CRM over the next few weeks to optimize it for touch screens.  It will have iPod like functions and should appeal to consumers and business people alike.  Not sure if it is an iPhone killer but it is sure to be very popular and part of the Smart Phone's rise to someday eclipse the PC as the primary personal device.

After seeing the BlackBerry bold at WES - All I have to say is that it is bold.

A very nice device that will do well against even the likes of the iPhone.

The bottom line is RIM has a great platform and the Bold being on that platform just makes it a great device.  The platform does a great job at enabling other applications - like CRM, GPS and many other applications.

Also the RIM community is mature and they are innovating new application every day.  Bold indeed!

In a tremendous reversal Apple Computer's Steve Jobs announced that Apple would (finally!) provide an iPhone SDK to 3rd party developers (like iEnterprises ) in order for us to create native applications for the iPhone. While the actual SDK won't ship until February 2008, this announcement is a massive strategy shift for Apple, who has thus far tried to control the applications available for the iPhone and limit 3rd party developers to Web 2.0 apps running in the Safari browser.

Maybe the iPhone will be a business device after all.  Stay tuned

Rumor has it that Google is working on a BlackBerry like device called the gphone.

Knowing Google it would probably be a good device with lots of openness.  So it could really be a good device to run enterprise application on like Wireless CRM.

As you may know my employer at iEnterprises has developed a wireless connector for Netsuite CRM.  

I have been working with several customers and it is really working out well.  The connector is relatively new but it is working well and it really allows people to use both the CRM and their wireless device in a more productive manner.  That's what it is all about in my opinion.

While the iPhone looks really cool it just is not a business device - at least not yet.

I'm hanging onto my BlackBerry (probably forever).

However I see potential in the device and at iEnterprises we are awaiting the SDK so we can perhaps build a Mobile Edge client on the device.

Looks to me like Notes is again the center of the universe at IBM / Lotus.  This is a good thing.  The other technologies are considered complimentary.  I am really impressed with the way they are positioning for the future.  Good news all around.
