CRM Software - The importance of a Smartphone Client

After years - most CRM Software vendors are still not providing an app to download with data stored locally.

The app stores from Apple and BlackBerry have really raised awareness that apps like this exist.

Despite that Siebel CRM Microsoft CRM SugarCRM and other CRM Software companies have not embraced a rich client app.

At this point I don't think it is in question as to if they should provide smartphone CRM clients.  Read more below to find out why I think this is the case.
CRM Software vendors like Siebel CRM, Microsoft CRM and others have not provided rich client apps for several reasons - here is why I think that's the case.

1. It's difficult to create - To do this correctly you need to write a client in the native application development platform for each device.  For example objective c on the iPhone and J2ME on the BlackBerry and so on.

2. It's difficult to support - It requires supporting a client server architecture and the client is sometimes disconnected.

3. Competition - In the case of Microsoft CRM they will not build a BlackBerry or iPhone client because they are competing with both platforms with Windows Mobile.  It seems like it would be an admission of failure to do so.

4. Checklist Mentality - They all have browser based mobile solutions so when prospects ask if they have a Smartphone client they can say yes.  I find this disingenuous but it must be getting them some sales.

There is more but at the end of the day it create an opportunity for us at iEnterprises by allowing us to provide not only CRM software with end to end capabilities but also to provide the smartphone apps for the other solutions using our Mobile Edge software platform.
